VILLAGES ON THE GRAND SITE

  GENERAL PRESENTATION
  SANTOIRE VALLEY

  PETITE RHUE VALLEY

  MARS VALLEY

  MARONNE, ASPRE and BERTRANDE VALLEY

  JORDANNE VALLEY

Legend has it that the Gallo-Romans erected a temple in honour of the goddess Diane at the top of the Laqueuille rock, hence the name Santuarium Dianae, Santoire.

The village of Dienne very clearly forms the doorway to the Santoire valley in the Puy Mary domain. Indeed, if geographically the valley takes a wide turn downstream of the commune, it is not until the village that it at last straightens up to head towards Puy Mary. Lavigerie will be your last stop before entering the Monts du Cantal conservation area.

As you go through the village centre you will reach the Santoire stream beneath Venus’ nipple, refuge for numbers of chamois and mouflons.

Dienne

This picturesque village is located in the Santoire valley, below the Limon plateau. It is a remarkable Auvergne village. Nestled in the hollow of a U-shaped valley, it lies opposite the Laqueuille rock.

Old rural-style houses with sculpted lintels encircle the XIIth century Roman church (a listed monument in the shape of a Latin cross). The architectural character along with the majestic Laqueuille rock are two of the village’s scenic attractions that are not to be missed.

There are several curiosities to be discovered: château de la Cheyrelle, the Quiroux path, Chapelle de Fortuniès, Drils mill, Lac Sauvage, etc.

The town hall and festival committee also organise numerous events to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Lavigerie

Located at the confluence of the Impradine coming down from Puy Mary and the Santoire (National road 680 from Dienne to Salers), it’s the last village before Puy Mary.

The Gens d’Armes village, birthplace of the poet Camille Gandilhon, dominates the “haut val enchanté” (enchanted high valley) where the Santoire springs to life. On the border of the royal mountain path, on the Cabre pass, you will find the oldest “buron” in the massif. It dates to 1721. The stone mason’s house in the village of Courbatière offers a magnificent sculpted lintel.
