  SANTOIRE VALLEY

  PETITE RHUE VALLEY

  MARS VALLEY

  MARONNE, ASPRE and BERTRANDE VALLEY

  JORDANNE VALLEY

Currently, when geographers use the name Petite Rhue or Rhue de Cheylade they refer to the river in the Cheylade valley which is joined by the Véronne and flows into the Grande Rhue.
A pinch in the relief, located at the height of the Apchon castle ruins, marks a split in the valley which, wooded and steep-sided downstream, broadens, and softens to let the bocage become established - replacing the forests in the upstream part. There are many tracks, in particular the GR400, in the Petite Rhue valley which lends itself well to hiking.

Cheylade

T
he Cheylade valley, heading in a northerly direction from Puy Mary, is dominated by the impressive Cirque formed by Puy Mary, Puy de la Tourte and Peyre Arse. It is one of the most beautiful panoramas in Haute Auvergne. All aspects of this environment deserve the visitors’ special attention: the built heritage contributes in a major way with the Tissonnières, Caire and Escorolles castles, and many outstanding residences whose lauzes and phonolites illustrate the traditional robustness of the Cantalien housing.

V
isiting the XIth century church is a must. As a listed monument, restored in the XVth and XVIIth centuries, the paintings on the wooden vault’s 1428 caissons are unique in France. The church is located on a headland dominating the valley from which there is an exceptional view of Puy Mary, Peyre Arse, Puy de la Tourte to the south, and the Apchon castle and Monts Dore to the north.

Many different events are organised by the Syndicat d’Initiative (tourist office), ValRhue association and Festivals committee during the season.
