VILLAGES ON THE GRAND SITE
On the West side of
Puy Violent, the Maronne (St Paul de Salers), Aspre
(Le Fau) and Bertrande (St Projet de Salers) valleys
open out onto the road to Salers, a remarkable medieval
village.

• St
Paul de Salers
You will discover a magnificent
virgin on her rock as well as a charming church with
a Roman part (choir), a gothic part (nave), and its
porch crowned by a steeple. The sanctuary deserves
special mention due to the regularity of its bond
both inside and out, as well as the quality of its
sculpted décors, statuary and furniture.
Take the time to visit the small farms where you will
discover Salers cheese making, or the Musée
du Fromage (cheese museum) and the Salers cow (Puy
Mary road).

• Le
Fau
This is a small village
at the foot of the mountains, located in the Aspre
valley, one of the most beautiful in Cantal. At the
old Vacheries des Grosjeans (Grosjeans’ cowsheds),
you will marvel at the fullness of the harmonious
and timeless marriage between roofs in grey lauze
and buried walls, carefully tended meadows and rugged
forests that cloak the scree slopes under the Roche
Parlante.
Le Fau SMPM
Passing
through woods and glades, you can go right to the
end of the Embaud glacial cirque, which is much richer
in minerals than it seems from the ridges of Puy d’Orcet,
Roche Taillade or Puy Chavaroche. Diverse entertainment
proposed by the town hall.

St Projet de Salers
At the origin of the
Bertrande, nestled in a green setting, this village
harbours many aspects of the local heritage (ovens,
fountains, crosses, “burons”, etc.). The
church is among these treasures. It dates to the XVIIIth
century and displays a magnificent bell tower. They
say it was built on a site called Affar de Villa Souteyra.
Farm visits to discover
how the local cheese is made or excursions into grazing
pastures, where warm and friendly people will greet
you.
