The Jordanne is formed
between Peyre Arse and Bataillouze on the first
South-West slopes of the Col de Cabre, in the opposite
direction to the Santoire.
Between Aurillac and
Velzic, the bottom of the valley is perfectly flat.
Then, from the Lascalles gravel pit, the bottom
of the valley shrinks away : the valley closes off
entirely to take on the mountainous “V”
shape, with gorges that continue right up to Puy
Mary.
This valley remained
very isolated for a long time. Wolves prowled the
valley up until the start of the century and were
caught in pits, examples of which can be seen at
Caylat, Roquegrande and more accessible, on the
Sentier du Col du Pertus (Pertus pass track) at
Elancèze. The road crossing the mountainous
barrier, which opened in 1937, at last gave tourism
some momentum.
