Cantal is mountain country characterised by a cool, humid climate that leaves its mark on the landscape as the seasons go by. In general, the West side is wetter and snow-covered whereas the Eastern side is continental, drier and colder.

The peaks above 1,500 metres are covered in snow for 5 months of the year, which means winter sports are abound throughout the massif: downhill skiing (Lioran ski resort), cross-country skiing and snowshoe hiking at a number of Nordic domains such as Col de Serre, Lascourt, Pont des Eaux, Col de Légal, etc.

Cool temperatures in the morning rapidly warm to the suns rays as the department boasts as many sunny days as the south of France.

The superb Cantalien countryside changes with the seasons offering new, equally enjoyable voyages of discovery. It is worth noting that spring, with its multitude of multi-coloured flowering vegetation, and autumn when magnificent warm colours mix with the fullness of nature in a protected environment, are exceptional times of year..
