• Forests

In the mountains, the forest is confined to the steep slopes since the flat areas are devoted to agriculture. The surface area covered by forest is therefore minor compared to the vast reaches of plateaux and ridges, so it is all the more important to preserve and protect this aspect of the landscape. The forest helps fortify the soil to avoid gullies furrowing the slopes.

On the Puy Mary massif, it covers a wide area (Mandailles beech grove, Bois Noirs du Fau, vast fir plantation in the Falgoux district forest) and has an influence on the landscape, tourism and economy. Locally, the relatively recent coniferous plantations (Lavigerie forest) stamp their mark on the countryside: the dark green sharply contrasting the soft green meadows or forests of broadleaved trees.

The Bois Mary, in the Claux district is a sectional forest: it allows common of estovers, in other words section holders (inhabitant of the village) can remove a certain quantity of wood every year for their own personal needs.

The Cantalien Massif forests contain a wealth of biological treasure (fauna and flora) and offer discovery paths set up by the E.N.S. (Espaces Naturels Sensibles) departmental policy.
