The Syndicat Mixte du
Puy Mary wanted to fully invest in setting up a Local
Plan for Hiking in its territory, and thereby
improve the management of a coherent network of walking
tracks on a Massif scale. It currently represents
200 Km of paths registered with the PDIPR and 100
Km of GR 400.
This Plan will include
hiking,
horse riding and mountain biking
on the massif, and will be implemented in compliance
with the departmental P.D.I.P.R. guidelines. It will
also incorporate the creation of discovery circuits
for families and will look into developing specialised
accommodation (stopover gîtes) and the promotion
of this activity.

In addition, quality and variety of landscape
on this Puy Mary site, complementarity of the sites
and excellent snow coverage allow the
outdoor activities to be diversified (hang-gliding,
winter mountaineering, cross-country skiing, rock climbing,
canyoning, white water sports, adventure routes, via
ferrata, etc.).
Consequently, in partnership
with the Conseil Général du Cantal which
initiated the thought process for developing A.P.P.N.s,
“Activités Physiques de Pleine Nature”
(physical activities outdoors) and the Parc Naturel
Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne, the Syndicat
Mixte will take part in reorganising the sites, their
access and parking areas, in introducing new tourist
products (via ferrata or via cordata), in site maintenance
and itineraries, in implementing a communication campaign
and even in welcoming participants.
