A PROGRAMME
OF OPERATIONS
The
programme of operations for the Grand Site can be
broken down into the following objectives :
• CAMPAIGN A: Enhancing the Grand Site
landscape. A landscape architect has already
carried out fabulous work to enhance the narrow, winding,
mountain roads that offer genuine panoramic views
of the countryside. The Pas de Peyrol site, but also
all the other mountain pass roads in the Massif, deserve
to be reviewed in terms of facilities and access (for
example, a Maison de Site (Site Centre) will welcome
visitors to the Pas de Peyrol). And finally, the heritage
of villages, old “burons”, fragile natural
areas that also afford the landscape its special character,
are being given particular attention, in terms of
layout and rehabilitation.

• CAMPAIGN B:
Organising the Grand Site discovery options.
In order to dissipate tourist numbers toward the Grand
Site valleys, thereby taking the pressure off the
Pas de Peyrol site, and giving a new boost to village
economies, formative facilities will be setup. First
of all, a network of 4 information and interpretation
centres on the central theme of the Volcan du Cantal
will be created in the Grand Site’s valleys
and will be linked up, in particular, by a Discovery
Transport system combining presentations and transport
(see “flagship tourism projects”). At
the same time, a local Hiking Plan will review all
the sign posting and discovery walking tracks on the
Grand Site. The other outdoor activities (mountain
biking, paragliding, rock climbing, etc.) will also
be made more accessible.

• CAMPAIGN C:
Revitalising the Grand Site economy. The
aim is to implement promotion and communication operations
(the Syndicat Mixte already takes part in many tourism
trade shows in France and abroad, and publishes tourist
brochures), to develop and market tourism products
(entertainment, discovery stays) as well as educational
and cultural operations in the valleys (making people
aware of the wealth and fragility of this natural
site and creating a Puy Mary Grand Site Festival).
• CAMPAIGN D: Promoting,
following through and managing the Grand Site operation.
This thrust involves the technical and administrative
follow-up on the Grand Site Operation, landscape follow
through and assessment of specific actions in the
“Puy Mary – Volcan du Cantal” Grand
Site operation.
