What is a Grand Site in France?

A Grand Site is an exceptional natural site, renowned on a national level and benefiting from protective measures (listed site according to the 1930 law pertaining to sites and monuments). Victim of its own success, the huge number of tourists visiting the site degrades this rich and fragile environment.

Baie du Mont Saint Michel

The "Operation Grand Site" (O.G.S.) approach proposed by the “Ministry of Ecology and Lasting Development” in 1989 offers an original and pragmatic solution to the issue of rehabilitation.
Pointe du Raz 

It value enhancing of this listed site, with the main aims being to:
restore the site from a scenic point of view ;
determine a policy of on-going management and autonomy ;
allow the adopted measures to benefit local economic development.


At present there are about thirty O.G.S.s registered by the Ministry.

The “Grand Site de France” label crowns this long and difficult enterprise by certifying quality management, respectful of the site’s identity and principles of on-going development, undertaken by the organisation responsible for the site.

The Network of Grand Sites in France :

The “Réseau des Grands Sites de France” is an association, created on 7 November 2000 aims to:
Share skills and experience acquired in terms of efficient and on-going management of the Grand Sites, while respecting the countryside and people who live there ;
Lend technical support to members in their quest to obtain a label of excellence “Grand Site de France” granted by the government ;
Be an active partner in the national policy for promoting outstanding protected sites ;
Make the “Grands Sites de France” known and promote them.

Cité de Carcassonne

The “Puy Mary - Volcan du Cantal” Grand Site is a founding member of the Network and actively participates in exchanging ideas and innovating on Grand Sites.
